Great Movies: Love and Longing

Watching a great romantic movie is the closest we can come to falling in love ourselves. Join us as we explore how movies reflect the romance, values, and spirit of their eras. Our selections range from the wit and emotional restraint of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, dancing to Gershwin in “Shall We Dance,” to Princess Audrey Hepburn zipping through Rome on a scooter with Gregory Peck in “Roman Holiday.” We conclude with "Bull Durham,” in which Susan Sarandon must choose between the charms of Kevin Costner and those of Tim Robbins. Come hear background information, as we watch each movie, and then discuss our reactions and thoughts.

Lynda Tisdell, a former high school English teacher, saw Peter Pan at the age of six and has never forgotten it. Passionate about movies, she has studied them, endlessly discussed them, and dreamed about them. She has previously taught many movie courses, recently “Great Movies: Comedy Classics,” “Great Movies: Standing for Principles,” “Broadway and Hollywood: Backstage Stories,” as well as many others.
