Thaddeus Kosciuszko: Engineer of the American Revolution

Learn about the fascinating life and times of General Thaddeus Kosciuszko, who won fame as a hero of the American Revolution and as a patriot in his homeland of Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus. An architect of the American victories at Saratoga and the Revolution as a whole, as well as chief engineer of West Point, Kosciuszko rivals Lafayette as one of the most effective foreign officers to serve the American cause. Jefferson called him “the purest son of Liberty I have ever known.” His is a unique story of patriotism, humanity, and sacrifice—and even romance—spanning two continents.  

Retired U.S. Ambassador George Krol spent 36 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, largely dealing with the states that emerged from the Soviet Union, including Russia and Ukraine. He is a former ambassador to Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Ambassador Krol is a resident of Middletown and a frequent Circle of Scholars instructor as well as an Adjunct Professor at the U.S. Naval War College and a local Affiliate of Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.
