Election 2024 Perspective: Debt, Inflation, Trade & Economic Regulation

Regardless of who the next President is and which party controls Congress, they will jointly face significant economic challenges.

We will discuss several of those economic challenges, including the federal deficits and debt, inflation and interest rates, trade and globalization and economic regulation in areas such as housing and climate. The two parties usually disagree about the economic issues listed. This seminar will not directly critique any party’s platform but will try to give context about why the challenges listed are salient and discuss some of the economic research on these topics.

Dennis Sheehan, Ph.D., is professor emeritus of finance at the Penn State University Smeal College of Business. He previously taught in the business schools at Purdue University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Rochester. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Georgetown University and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. Dennis is happily retired in his hometown of Newport.
