The Religious Diversity of Newport—Then and Now

Description

Many religious congregations have settled in Newport over the past 385 years, resulting in a rich and diverse history.

After an overview of the Reformation, this seminar will focus on Newport's colonial experience as well as Rhode Island's reputation for religious toleration. Classroom sessions will be combined with walking tours (at least one) to religious sites in Newport. This seminar is a condensed version of a course John designed and offered for many years to undergraduate students at Salve Regina University to encourage an appreciation for "the City-by-the-Sea" during their time studying and living in Newport. A field trip in Newport will take place on either the second or third session, depending on the weather. Two field trip groups will be formed during the first class (12:30 - 2 p.m. and 3 - 4:30 p.m.).
